List of industry professionals associations for networking and fellowship
American Translators Association (ATA)
The annual event is held in North America. The ATA holds CPD events, webinars and online courses well worth attending.
Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT).
Similar to the ATA. AUSIT also holds online webinars and events.
Business Networking International (BNI)
A global business networking organization. You can find a chapter virtually anywhere in the world. I’ve been connected to BNI in the past. You can broaden your professional network and make commercial contacts and business friends.
You are obliged to attend a weekly meeting in your chapter which can be in person or online. In the post-pandemic world hybrid meetings are now rife of course.
European language Industry Association (ELIA)
Elia runs a Together event which is very good for beginners. It has a careers fair where you can meet translation agencies who in turn want to meet suppliers and freelancers. What’s very good for beginners is to attend a live together event which is usually held in February. There are other networking and executive events, but Together is very good for early to mid-career freelancers.
Chartered Institute of linguists (CIOL)
CL = chartered linguist. Two letters after your name as well as MCIOL = Member of the Chartered Institute of linguists.
This is also useful for basically networking and you have access to a lot of professional events. You have a personal profile and you can access events and take parts and see CPD on offer through this institute. This is the equivalent record and you can log your CPD and you are awarded a certificate if you log at least 30 hours of CPD which is one full month over a calendar year. I recommend you try and aim for 30 hours through your events and you can actually formally log your attendance at conferences through the ITI record.
European Medical Writers Association (EMWA)
If you are more inclined towards medical translation, you could consider an organisation where there is actually more writing going on. This is a profession where there is no source document. People actually author research articles from scratch with a clear brief. EMWA is quite an affluent association, there is a lot of money sloshing around and a lot of pharmaceutical companies involved. Expect a conference to set you back by about €2000 (good for tax deduction purposes!).
Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI)
MITI = Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting.
ITI is a very prestigious professional translation and interpreting network. It’s very useful in the sense that your membership allows you to certify documents. I certify my Spanish to English translations with a professional stamp. There are three levels of membership: associate, member and fellow. You can also purchase the ISO standard which is useful to have on your email signatures. I regularly see a lot of healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, physios who want to certify their documentation and qualifications before the British official professional bodies.. ITI membership also gives you access to a personalized CPD record you can use to log and keep your professional training up to date each year.
Mediterranean Editors and Translators (MET)
This is very good option if you choose a biomedical specialization or if you work in the field of medicine. MET is top heavy with biomedical translators and editors. There is an annual event usually held in the Mediterranean area: Spain, Portugal, Italy.
World Medical Writers Association (WMA)
If you are more inclined towards biomedical translation there is also a global equivalent for EMWA.
